Most reel problems come from lack of maintenance. Sand, grit, and dried lubricant are the primary culprits — not manufacturing defects. A reel that feels rough, skips drag, or lays line unevenly almost always responds to a basic cleaning before any parts need replacing.
Fix: Clean the bail arm and roller, re-lube the main shaft and drag washers, and check line lay under load. Do this at the start of every season and after any trip involving sand or silt.
